Baylor German Professor Selected to Attend Fulbright-Sponsored Seminar in Germany
March 19, 2012 Jennifer L. Good, Ph.D., associate professor of German in the College of Arts & Sciences at Baylor University, has been selected to attend the 2012 Baden-Württemberg Seminar for American Faculty in German and German Studies this summer at the University of Tübingen in Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.The seminar, which will be held June 10-23, offers professional development to American educators in German studies, including German language, literature, culture, professional education, politics and higher education. It includes visits to other universities in Baden-Württemberg to explore the regional priorities and current developments, facilitated through encounters with colleagues, administrators, students and experts in the fields.
Funding is provided by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts, and the German-American Fulbright Commission in Berlin.
Good said she is excited to have been chosen because it will be a great learning experience, as Fulbright and the universities in Baden-Württemberg have a reputation for excellence. More than that, the opportunity to travel and participate in the seminar with other American German Studies professors is important for networking and cooperation in the field.
"The seminar itself promises to be very instructive," Good said. "We will learn first-hand about the recent changes in higher education in Germany, tour campuses and meet faculty and administration at the Universities of Baden-Württemberg and learn, from the German side, about the developments in 'German as a foreign language' pedagogy. I expect that what I learn will be immediately useful in my classes and in my research."
Good earned bachelor's degrees in German and in humanities, political science and Russian, from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1990. She received her master's degree in German literature and pedagogy from the University of Iowa in 1993 and her doctoral degree in modern German literature and film from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 2004.
Before joining the Baylor faculty, she served on the Indiana University faculty from 1998 to 2003.
Her research interests include East German (DEFA) films and post-war cultural projects, such as politics and gender of the Cold War, literature and German Studies. In addition to teaching and scholarship, she is co-director of the Baylor in Germany program, German Club adviser and co-sponsor of the German honor society, Delta Phi Alpha.

A Baylor sophomore was awarded first place at the 23rd annual Texas
State Japanese Language Speech Contest on Saturday, March 10, at Rice
University in Houston.
As the winner of the free speech college and university advanced level competition, Gus Holdrich, a university scholar major from Bethesda, Md., was awarded a round-trip ticket to Japan. He beat out students from other highly ranked universities, including the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University.
Holdrich and two other Baylor students were named finalists in the 15th annual Dallas Japanese Speech Contest, hosted by the Dallas Japanese Association and the Japanese Teachers Association of Texas, last month.
Ryan Smith, junior language and linguistics major from Temple, was awarded first place; Holdrich was awarded second; and Miki Wang, freshman biology major from El Paso, was named third at the Feb. 11 contest in Carrollton, Texas. Since the competition, Smith has been selected by the prestigious Critical Language Scholarship Program to study in Japan this summer.
In preparation for the contest, the students met with Yuko Prefume, lecturer in Japanese at Baylor, and Yoshiko Fujii Gaines, lecturer in Japanese at Baylor, and decided on speech topics.
"After drafting and revising several times, they memorized their speeches," Prefume said. "Then, they practiced their speech delivery, including intonation and pronunciation."
Other students who participated in the contest are: Emma Perry, senior mathematics major from Paris, Texas; Jonathan Tingle, junior university scholar major from Whitfield, Miss.; and Blake Yanez, junior international studies major from Richardson, Texas.
"I am very proud of all six of them," Prefume said. "In addition to their already demanding schoolwork, they went above and beyond to challenge themselves. I want to commend every one of them for their dedication and hard work."
